Biography and performances

Steve O'Dwyer was born in Colorado in 1982. As his name suggests, he is of Irish descent. He is best known for his performances in the World Poker Tour (WPT) and the European Poker Tour (EPT). In the WPT, he has 1 title, 4 final tables and 4 paid places. In the EPT, he has 2 titles, 9 final tables and 22 paid places. He is also a regular player in high-stakes tournaments. His total winnings in live tournaments are close to 40 million dollars. His biggest lifetime win came in 2015 when he won the 2015 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, a $100,000 buy-in tournament. Some players dream of winning $100,000 in a poker tournament, but Steve plays in tournaments where that's the entry fee. Now you understand why we mentioned he was a regular at high roller tournaments.

His most notable wins

We'd need several pages to talk about all of Steve O'Dwyer's tournament wins, but to summarise, here are a few notable wins on his record.

In 2015 he won the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure for $1.8 million.

In 2018 he won the PCA $50,000 High Roller for $769,500.

In 2020 he won the SCOOP High Roller on PokerStars for $521,598.

In 2023 alone, he won several purses including one for $1 million in a tournament in South Korea. He's played tournaments in over 10 countries around the world in 2023 alone (his job means he travels a lot obviously). We probably haven't heard the last of him with all the tournaments he's playing!

The Black Friday disaster

Any active online poker player in 2011 remembers the event when the 2 biggest online poker sites had been blocked. To sum up in a very short way a story that could make a 3-hour movie, players with funds on Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars didn't know whether or not they would ever have access to the money they had on the site (money that, as of 15 April 2011, had just been blocked). This episode greatly affected Steve, who had all his money online. At the time, he was staying with a friend and had to borrow money to eat. Fortunately for him, the whole story had a happy ending and he is now one of the biggest winners in the history of live poker tournaments.
