Biography and performances
Tom Dwan is a living poker legend despite his relatively young age (born in 1986). He made a name for himself in 2008 as the terror of the heads-up tables on Full Tilt Poker, where he played at the highest limits. For a long time, he was the "King of the Setup". But Dwan has had his Waterloo on more than one occasion. As well as being a pro on Full Tilt Poker (signed from 2009) for years, Dwan also made a name for himself on Poker After Dark and High Stakes Poker.
Modest beginnings on Full Tilt Poker to stardom
Before becoming a poker legend, Dwan cut his teeth on Full Tilt Poker with a simple $50 deposit. He started out playing sit'n'gos and tournaments, before moving on to heads-up cash games, where he made his name. In 2007, he won over $300,000 in his year, which is impressive, but nothing compared to his 2008 year during which he won over $5 million US.
His legendary sessions against "Isildur1" and "jungleman12"
During his days as king of the cash game tables at Full Tilt Poker, Dwan challenged anyone to play him on 4 heads-up tables at Full Tilt Poker. This became known as the "durrrr challenge".
And it was during this challenge that a previously unknown player made his appearance; Viktor "Isildur1" Blom. Blom, who played Dwan on 6 simultaneous heads-up tables, ultimately won US$5 million against Dwan. The day after this epic session between the two players, in the poker world, Viktor Blom was the name on everyone's lips.
Dwan also took part in a challenge against Daniel "jungleman12" Cates, During the match, jungleman12, won $1.2 million against Dwan. The aim of the challenge between the two was to play a total of 50,000 hands. After 19,335 hands and a loss of $1.2 million, Dwan postponed the sessions again and again. The challenge was even postponed until 2017 (it had started in 2010). Since he didn't honor the agreement to play the 50,000 hands, Dwan paid Cates a penalty fee ranging from $700,000 to $800,000 in total. The 2 players have spoken to discuss a settlement, but nothing has yet come to light.
